allpay Limited announced as winner of West Midlands Living Wage Champion Award 2016
Monday, 31st October 2016 – allpay Limited, the UK’s leading payments specialist based in Herefordshire, has been chosen as the winner of the Living Wage Champion Awards 2016 for the West Midlands region. The awards are part of Living Wage Week 2016, a national celebration of responsible pay, running from October 31st-5th November.
Coordinated by the Living Wage Foundation, the awards recognise Living Wage employers that have made great contributions to communities and industries by implementing and understanding the life changing importance of the Living Wage.
The Living Wage is an hourly rate calculated independently and updated annually. It is calculated according to the basic cost of living using the ‘Minimum Income Standard’ for the UK. Decisions about what to include in this standard are set by the public; it is a social consensus about what people need to earn to make ends meet.
There are now over 2,800 employers registered with the Living Wage Foundation. One Champion Award winner has been named in each region of the UK: Scotland; Wales; Northern Ireland; the East Midlands; the West Midlands; the East of England; Yorkshire and the Humber; North East England; North West England; South East England; South West England; and London.
The awards were judged by an independent panel of community leaders from Citizens UK, national community organising charity and home of the Living Wage campaign. allpay Limited won the award for the region after becoming Herefordshire’s first accredited Living Wage employer back in 2014. As the county is one of the lowest paid in the UK, the firm has faced opposition from those who wanted to keep salaries low for the region.
Living Wage Foundation Director, Katherine Chapman, said: “Congratulations to allpay Limited on becoming a Living Wage Champion Award winner. With nearly 3000 employers now signed up, it is wonderful to have the firm leading the way in Herefordshire. The leadership of responsible employers is making a profound difference in the lives of families and communities across the UK. Thank you very much for celebrating and championing the Living Wage in your city.”
Steve Foulger, HR Director at allpay Limited said, “As the largest company based in Herefordshire, we felt it was important to set a different tone to others. Many businesses will see the Living Wage as a costly drain. But I can assure businesses it is positive and any effort is more than worthwhile. Talent acquisition can be difficult but the Living Wage has given us a competitive edge. Unless employees feel valued, they will have no desire to drive a business forward. But don’t take our word for it, try it yourself.”
